The main objective of the Gill Net is to capture fish of a certain size in the bottom of a watercourse by means of their gills
- The commercial fishing gillnet is capable of catching a multitude of fish species (herring, mackerel, cod, shad, walleye, salmonids, sturgeon).
- It consists of a rectangular net spread vertically in the water.
- The length can vary between 50ft and 300ft and the depth is usually 6ft or 8ft.
- To keep the net vertical in the water, floatsare installed every 6ft on the top and alead coreline on the bottom
- This is for passive and selective fishery; the meshes must be adapted to the type of fish sought, which will be held by the meshes at the gills.
- The gillnet is made of monofilamentormultifilament. The size of themeshand the percentage of mounting are chosen according to the fish sought.
